How To Prepare
Your Own Tax Return for an S Corporation

Workshop Leader: Jina Etienne, CPA, Etienne & Associates, LLC

After talking about how to prepare business and personal tax returns at CPCUG Entrepreneurs and Consultants SIG events for several years, CPA Jina Etienne is adding a 4-hour hands-on tax workshop to assist those who plan to prepare their own S corporation tax returns.

Jina will start the workshop by reviewing a case study so all attendees will get a good understanding of "the books." From there, she'll walk through the basics of preparing the 2003 tax return for a sample company. She'll conclude by highlighting "hot spots" on the individual return of a typical company shareholder as he/she carries the corporate income to his or her personal return.

There will be four "sessions."

Session 1--Overview

  • Accounting Basics--So everyone starts on the same page
  • Review of the Books--To get a good understanding of the case study facts and circumstances
  • Highlights of S Corporation Rules--Who qualifies, how it is taxed, and what is required
  • Review of Tax Forms--Getting familiar with the forms to be prepared during session 3
Session 2--Working the Numbers
  • Cash vs Accrual Options--The different accounting methods and their tax consequences
  • Preparation of Financial Statements--The foundation for the tax return
Session 3--Drafting the Return
  • From Financials to Forms--Where do all the numbers go?
  • Reconciliation--How you "check" what's been done
  • Review--What to look for after you think you are done
Session 4--Bringing It All together
  • From Business to Personal--How to carry the  figures to your personal return
  • The Big Picture--How your business impacts your overall tax situation
This will be a "hands-on" workshop, not a lecture. The goal is to help participants understand the process from beginning ("wow, that's a lot of receipts") to end ("phew, my tax returns are finished"). Participants should bring a calculator, a few pencils (with erasers), and a notebook. The workshop will be fast paced, and you'll be doing some of the work on your own, so we can get everything done in 4 hours!

Jina will have coffee and treats to jump start the morning. After that participants will work straight through (with several short breaks). If you're likely to get hungry before we finish, bring a brown bag
lunch or snack.

Jina will be available for questions and answers throughout the workshop, as well as for followup afterward via e-mail.

Workshop Leader: Jina Etienne, CPA, has more than 14 years of public accounting experience. She began her career with Deloitte & Touche, one of the "Big Eight" accounting firms, where her focus was tax planning and compliance for corporations, partnerships, and S corporations ranging from government contractors and vending companies to hospitality and retail firms. When she left Deloitte & Touche, her focus shifted to the needs of small- and medium-sized businesses.

With her own practice, Jina Etienne provides a wide range of accounting services for businesses and individuals, including tax planning and preparation, and business consulting. Her client base is diverse, including retail and service-based businesses as well as consultants and contractors. For individuals, her services generally include tax return preparation and tax planning, including tax research and representation before the IRS.

Ms. Etienne earned an M.S. in taxation in 1993 and a B.S.B.A. in accounting in 1989 from American University. Jina has also taught accounting as an adjunct professor at American University and currently teaches QuickBooks at local accounting seminars and conferences.

Jina may be reached via e-mail
