Fellow Virginia SIG member Daniel Fisher will give a presentation on the latest changes to Generic Top Level Domains (ie. .com, .org, .info, etc.) being considered by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. ICANN established a single, authoritative public root to anchor the Internet Domain Name System (DNS), and today manages that unique root in the public interest according to policies developed with technical and other advice received through a community process. The DNS is a globally distributed database of domain name (and other) information intended to provide a convenient means to refer to all sites available on the Internet. The DNS offers an easy-to-use means to unambiguously refer to web sites, e-mail servers, and the Internet's other services. With the DNS the Internet achieves a global communications medium for commerce and other expressive activities. One of its design goals is to reliably provides the same answers to the same queries from any source on the public Internet to support predictable routing of Internet communications. This design goal requires a globally unique public name space derived from a single, globally unique DNS root. ICANN manages the DNS root of names by defining plural Top Level Domains (TLDs), the subordinate levels of which are managed by respective TLD registers. After initial solicitations, ICANN received over 1400 applied for new generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs) and plans to delegate up to 1,000 new gTLDs per year to respective domain name registers to issue unique names assigned to numbers. Such a dramatic change may threaten existing brands and businesses or may provide additional opportunities to existing brands and businesses. Internet users will begin to see this change in late 2013 or 2014. |

This month we will have a short presentation from a CPCUG Science Fair winner. Brian Ohlhausen of Bishop O'Connell High School will present his findings on Networking Interference. Certain household appliances use the same radio frequency as wireless routers and reduce the strength of the signal sent by the router to the laptop. Mr. Ohlhausen looked at the effects caused by common household appliances electromagnetic interference on Wireless-G networks. Using the information gathered by Mr. Ohlhausen, one can limit the effects of this interference on their wireless networks. Fellow Virginia SIG member Mark Mabee will present two products, GSView and BartPE. Continuing on the CPCUG general meeting's theme of creating pdf files, Mark will first demo the use of the GSView freeware product to create pdf files. The second product is Bart Preinstalled Environment (BartPE). BartPE is used to create a bootable Windows CD-ROM or DVD suitable for PC maintenance tasks. It provides a complete Win32 environment with network support, a graphical user interface and FAT/NTFS/CD file system support. Very handy for testing systems with no OS, rescuing files, scanning for viruses, and so on. A likely replacement for your DOS boot diskette. Mark will also cover "slipstreaming" service packs with Windows. |

Dennis will explain and show the process of capturing images from VHS tape or digital camera to your computer hard drive. From there it's a simple process to record onto DVD recordable media.
